Should Your Web Designer Do Your Hosting?
Many clients who talk to us ask if we provide hosting for our Denver web design clients. Although we could, and it might be convenient to our clients, you really don't want your web design or development company to host your site. Here's why:
1. Infrastructure - most companies like ours do not have anything near the set up that you need for proper hosting. I'm talking about redundancy, power fail safe, raised flooring, proper cooling, fire protection, security, etc.
2. Support - we are not set up for 24/7 support, nor are most web design companies. So, when your site goes down over the weekend, there's not much you can do.
3. Technical Expertise - software, hardware and security patches need to be constantly updated. Most web companies don't have those expertise or automated processes in house.
4. Control & Ownership - if our office burns down, we go out of business, or you want to move to a different vendor, you do not want your files and code under the control of your vendor. Sometimes the transition is very smooth, but I have seen web companies hold files hostage because they are hosting the site. You don't want to get into that position.
Also, many web companies act as resellers of hosting packages and get some sort of monetary kick-back for selling a certain hosting package. We prefer to stay neutral and suggest the solution that is going to best suit your needs instead of the one that makes us the most money.
I hope that helps. If you have any questions on your particular situation, we're happy to help.
