Whether you are working with a web development company to build a brand new website or redesigning your current site with a web design pro, making sure you've got quality content should be high up on your list of priorities. Having quality content that is informative, compelling and complete with proper SEO can mean the difference between ranking well in search engines and not.
Back in the day, it wasn't unusual to see websites that were stuffed with keywords or those that had less than stellar content ranking well in search engines. But as the search engines, Google in particular, evolved and developed more sophisticated algorithms that could detect when a website used what is now known as “Black Hat SEO”, those practices are frowned upon in the industry and can even get you blacklisted. If you aren't sure whether or not your website falls into the Black Hat SEO category, check out our blog “Black Hat vs. White Hat vs. Grey Hat (Sorting Hat What?)”.
You might be asking what this has to do with the content you have on your site, and the answer to that question is EVERYTHING! Nowadays, gaining search engine ranking for your website requires a variety of factors and high quality, fresh content is one of them. They want to make sure that the content within a site is relevant to a user's query, authoritative, trustworthy, and conducive to a positive experience for users.
When you are developing content, you want to make sure that you have keyword phrases that you want to rank for included without overdoing it. Include too many keywords (or for that matter, links) and your content could appear spammy which will, in turn, get you a lower search engine ranking with possible penalties. Think of how you feel when you click on a link in a set of search results. If the website you clicked on is filled with too many links or spam content, you're outta there with a quickness.
Write content that is relevant to your target market. For example, if you run a website featuring vintage furniture, develop your content in such a way that it resonates with users and makes them want to come to your site. Adding a location is helpful too. Include keywords like “repurposed vintage furniture in Denver” or “DIY vintage dresser ideas”. Remember that although you do want to rank well in search engine queries, you are ultimately writing content that makes for a user friendly experience, which will drive traffic to your site and help increase your profits. After all, there is no point in building a website, or hiring a web development company if users don’t find it useful.
