How Social Media Affects Search Engine Optimization

Not only is social media a popular form of social networking and business promotion, it has now become an essential factor in online marketing for businesses. Social media affects search engine optimization in many ways:
Bing's Duane Forrester, Sr. Product Manager with Bing's Webmaster Program, says that their search ranking is in the order of #1 Content #2 Social Media #3 Links. Social media influences your rankings more than links do!
Google+ is now merged with Google search. This is huge for search engine rankings! When you are signed into Google, you can search against the entire web and your own Google social map (including people profiles, posts, your circles, photos, Picasa, and more). Google calls it “Search across your world”.
Shared content in social media also affects organic search engine rankings. Shared content includes likes, retweets, shares, and Google+1. (http://mashable.com/2011/09/09/seo-social-media/)
Along with shared content, user interaction ranks higher in search. As Duane Forrester says, the greater the user experience, the higher you rank. This includes questions, polls, contests, blogs and more.
Social media has changed the way that businesses have and will use Internet marketing, so developing social media strategies goes hand-in-hand with good SEO practices.
