Breast Cancer Awareness through Social Media Marketing

Yes, I am obsessed with Yoplait not only because they are utterly delicious as I begin every day in the office by enjoying a Whips yogurt, but there is something sentimental about supporting breast cancer research just from loving my breakfast. (If you aren't familiar with how Yoplait donates to breast cancer awareness; for every yogurt lid that they receive, they donate 10 cents to Susan G. Comen for the Cure.)
As you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and you might have noticed your Facebook news feeds blowing up with contests, donation requests, stories and more on this topic. You may have seen the color pink skyrocket in all shades all over your Facebook home page and because of this, I wanted to take a look at a couple of Breast Cancer Awareness Facebook applications as well as pages that allow company followers to participate in this cause.
Estee Lauder is a great example- when you first visit their Facebook page, you are greeted with a graphic of four women “together” shining a light on breast cancer. This Facebook application is all about sharing a message of hope for yourself, someone you know, or even to someone you don't.
Hanes is also participating in a global campaign for women and loved ones. Hanes allows their fans (or soon to be fans) to send a free virtual comfort package (and for every package sent, $1 is donated), share a message of hope to the world, and a make-your-own t-shirt supporting breast cancer awareness. This not only allows followers to support breast cancer awareness, but provides something interactive and meaningful to each and every woman- whether she is affected by breast cancer, knows someone affected by breast cancer, or just wants to contribute.
Not only can a company care about their community by donating profits to a great cause, but there are ways to use social media to increase awareness for a company as well as a charity for very little or no cost at all. I can't tell you if I decided to start eating Yoplait yogurts for any particular reason, but knowing that I am helping a great cause that affects many women world-wide makes me enjoy eating it even more.
