Six Ways Design Can Make or Break Your Website

At Fusionbox, each department produces great work that makes our clients happy. The design team is no different. We sat down with the DesigNerds to see what kind of advice they would give to someone looking to understand how site design can have a positive (or negative) effect on their website as a whole. Here's what they had to say.

  1. Clearly tell your user what you do. Your site design should reflect what your business is about whether you're a law firm or a snowboarding company.

  2. Ensure consistency among interactive elements. Links and tabs should be the same font and color throughout the site. Having inconsistent fonts, colors, or functionality can make your site look unprofessional.

  3. Use graphics and photos only as an aid, not the main content. While photos and graphics can be fun to look at, they can ruin the look of a page if they're used only to fill white space.

  4. Give helpful feedback to the user. Whether it be through 'thank you' pages, bread crumbs, error messages, or success pages, telling your user where they are, what they did, and what to do next is quite helpful and makes for a better user experience.

  5. Make content scannable. Consider all elements of typography to ensure content is easy to read. Use fonts, color schemes, font sizes and spacing that is easy on the eyes. If your user can comfortably read your content, the less chance you have of them leaving your site.

  6. According to Fusionbox designer, Justin, there needs to be more LOLcats. There are far too many websites that lack amazing cat pictures. We couldn't help but agree, so enjoy this picture of Internet sensation, Grumpy Cat.
