Why Usability Is Important To Your Business

Nowadays, if you have a business, you more than likely have a website--or at least you should. The Internet has become a huge part of our everyday lives, and people rely on it to find information about everything from dancing cats to reviews on local businesses. Your website says a lot about who you are and what makes your business unique. Since the chances of users visiting your website before ever visiting your brick and mortar business (if you have one) are high, wouldn't it make sense to ensure quality website usability? Too many business owners make the mistake of hiring a local web developer or a friend to build a quick website and don’t pay any attention to website usability.
Let's say you have a business selling sports gear. When visitors come to your site, you want to make sure that they stick around long enough to find what they're looking for instead of getting frustrated and going elsewhere. The design, functionality and intuitive usability of your site will matter greatly when it comes to user experience. Users who can quickly and easily navigate through your site are far more likely to convert from user to customer…and are more likely to recommend your site to their friends.
So, what should you be looking for when determining the usability of your website? Good on-site SEO? Clean code? Crisp, consistent web design? Yes, to all of the above.
There are several aspects of your site that should be reviewed and questions you need to ask. This post covers a few of them, but for a more complete list, check out “What to Include in a Usability Study".
Begin asking yourself questions like:
- Are key user paths accessible with the smallest amount of clicks?
- Are all forms clear and concise?
- Do the buttons and links look like buttons and links?
- Is the font the correct size?
- Is the design of the website conducive to what your target market is looking for?
- Do you update your site with fresh content regularly to keep users interested in coming back?
- Does your website display correctly in all major web browsers like Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox?
If you answered “yes” to any or all of these, then you're on the right path. If you answered “no”, you are probably missing out on some quality lead generation opportunities and profits.
