At Fusionbox, we often talk with companies that are interested in doing some sort of social media marketing. The conversations usually start with something like, "We keep hearing all this stuff about Twitter and we need to be on there ... now!"

With all of the social media sites out there it can be hard for companies to keep up, especially for those that have a full plate of existing traditional marketing and advertising duties. You may think your company is missing the boat on new customers or you may be anxious to join the hip new crowd.

If you're beginning to feel this way, stay calm and remember that social media is just another venue to communicate with potential customers.

It's easy to be dazzled by the new fads and technology associated with social media, but the same basic principles of marketing still apply: Find your target audience and communicate your message to that audience. Remember that social marketing is just one of the pieces of your marketing mix and may or may not be a good fit for your company.

Before declaring that you "must" be on Facebook or Twitter, ask yourself the same questions you would about any other form of marketing or advertising: How will it help build sales and brand awareness, and what's the ROI?

Stay focused on your brand and goals, then craft your social media marketing plan.
